The Kranz Hill Farm CSA has joined with Stone Run Farm in Rising Sun, Maryland, to provide its shareholders with eggs and meat during the 2015 season!
Stone Run Farm is a family farm, just sixteen miles away, raising chickens for eggs and meat. Their birds are “pasture-raised,” let out to a different section of pasture every day, and about 20 percent of their diet is insects and grass.
We are very glad to be able to offer local eggs and meat to our shareholders. The eggs will be available by subscription, at a little over $80/season for a dozen eggs each week. Subscriptions are available for a half-dozen, dozen, dozen and a half, or two dozen a week. They will be available for pick-up at our Tuesday and Friday distributions.
(Prices occasionally change; click here to see prices and make a purchase.)
The chickens will be available by order, at least a week in advance. They will also be picked up at the regular distributions. Of particular interest, there will be different breeds sold throughout the year, so shareholders can try different types of chicken. (Most chickens purchased at the supermarket are of one breed, the fast-growing Cornish Cross.)
Prices will vary — the Cornish Cross broilers will be sold for $3.89/lb, with other birds being a little more expensive.
